Keyboard Shortcuts in Wise Owl Legal

To facilitate the fastest data entry, a variety of keyboard shortcuts are provided throughout Wise Owl Legal.

As much as possible, we try not to interfere with your default web browser's keyboard shortcuts.

A printable reference card is also available. TODO: make the reference card and list below - NCT. in progress NCT

Guide to Shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts come in two forms: key combinations and key sequences.

Some examples of combinations:

  • Ctrl + S - Control and 's' together
  • Alt + Shift + R - Alt, Shift and 'r' all together

Some examples of key sequences:

  • a,b = 'a' then 'b'
  • Ctrl + K, t = Control and 'k' together, then 't'

On Macintosh computers, the Ctrl key is the same as the Command key.

If you are using a tablet device such as an iPad, the keyboard shortcuts work as normal, but you will require a Bluetooth keyboard for them to be practical. (TODO: confirm this actually works KMc)

Mac OS Specific

On Mac OS, to tab through Checkbox and Radio Button fields, you must change your system settings, or use the Mac shortcut CMD + F7. When this is disabled, your web browser will skip past checkboxes and radio buttons.

Preferences -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts -> Full Keyboard Access

When trying to select checkboxes, you can press the space bar to select ('tick') a checkbox. Or use the arrow keys to tab through the checkboxes

Global

These shortcuts are available on almost  every page in Wise Owl Legal.

TODO: include relevant browser shortcuts too for reference

To choose through checkboxes (radio buttons)
Chrome - You need to use arrows to move through the options
Firefox - You can use the Tab button to move through the options
Mac (Safari or Chrome) - Need to use arrows to move through the options

Note to Karen: I'd suggest we use sequences as much as possible rather than taking over web browser's shortcuts too much. Perhaps something like Ctrl + O, S for search (the O being 'Owl'),  Ctrl+J, A to jump to contacts Additional Data tab (the J being 'Jump'). We can't use Ctrl + W because it closes the current browser window, and if it gets pressed accidently all hell will break loose! Ctrl+L (for Legal) jumps to the navigation bar in browsers, so we can probably take that over as well.
